David Beckham described being knighted by The King as ‘a truly humbling honour’ when the knighthood was announced, and now he’s been able to celebrate with his proud mum, Sandra, in the most British way.
The former footballer and England captain explained that, ‘Growing up in east London with parents and grandparents who were so patriotic and proud to be British, I never could have imagined I would receive such a truly humbling honour.’ So, to celebrate the occasion with his mum, David enjoyed a plate of a classic east London dish – pie and mash, of course.
Sharing a photograph of the meal on Instagram, David revealed that his mum was in floods of happy tears throughout the lunch. David said it was the first time he’d seen her since the exciting news and she’d reacted emotionally.
‘Mum cried when she arrived, cried during lunch and cried when I was leaving,’ wrote David. He said it was a ’special moment for us all’ and added, 'Love you mum x’. The location chosen for the special lunch was Tony’s Pie & Mash Shop in Waltham Abbey, which is a favourite haunt of David’s that he’s visited many times over the years.
While David was able to celebrate with his mum, he revealed that he hasn’t had a chance to mark the occasion with his dad, Ted, yet, writing ‘(Dad’s next 😂)’, tagging Ted in the post.
David Beckham has a long history with the Royals and is an ambassador for The King’s Foundation. He recently joined His Majesty, along with Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet and Alan Titchmarsh, to celebrate 35 years of the foundation and meet ‘inspiring people who are transforming lives through initiatives in environmental education, traditional heritage crafts and sustainable architecture’.
