SEVEN-METRE WIDE REPLICA OF EARTH TO GO ON DISPLAY IN DORSET

A seven-metre wide replica of Earth is set to go on display in Sherborne.

The artwork, called Gaia, features detailed NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface and will be suspended three-dimensionally.

Created by UK artist Luke Jerram, the touring artwork will be exhibited in Sherborne Abbey from Friday, August 29 to Friday, September 12.

The installation is being brought to the town by Sherborne Town Council and Sherborne Abbey.

The aim is to offer the community a chance to see the planet from a new perspective, evoking the Overview Effect.

This experience, reported by astronauts, fosters a sense of awe for the planet and a renewed sense of responsibility towards the environment.

The Gaia exhibition is open to all, providing an opportunity to engage with the artwork in a calm and reflective setting.

The exhibition will also feature games and an interactive quiz for all ages.

A series of events will be held under the Gaia installation, including interactive talks for both primary school children and adults, presented by the UK Space Agency.

OneOrchestra’s concert, Earth Music brings orchestral music into extraordinary spaces, merging sound and visual art for an immersive experience. (Image: OneOrchestra) The second ticketed event will take place on Friday, September 5.

This includes two cinematic performances by the internationally recognised OneOrchestra.

Their concert, Earth Music, brings orchestral music into unique spaces, combining sound and visual art.

The 16-piece ensemble will play reimagined music by Hans Zimmer, Max Richter and Coldplay, reflecting themes of nature, the universe, and connection, made even more poignant by the presence of the Gaia installation.

Tickets for these premium events can be purchased via the Sherborne Town Council website.
